A location QR code encodes a specific set of geographic coordinates so that when someone scans it, their phone opens a maps app — Google Maps, Apple Maps, or whatever the device default is — with navigation already aimed at that exact spot. How to Find the Coordinates You Need

If you do not already have the latitude and longitude, the fastest way to get them is Google Maps. Open maps on desktop, right-click on the exact spot you want, and click on the coordinates that appear at the top of the context menu. They copy to your clipboard automatically. You can also tap and hold on any spot in the mobile app to drop a pin, then read the coordinates from the card that slides up from the bottom.

For Apple Maps on Mac, control-click on the location and select "Show Coordinates." On iPhone, drop a pin by tapping and holding, then scroll down in the card that appears to see the latitude and longitude.

Latitude comes first (north–south position), longitude second (east–west position). Positive latitude values are north of the equator, negative are south. Positive longitude values are east of the prime meridian (Greenwich), negative are west. Most locations in Europe and North America have positive latitudes; North American longitudes are negative, European longitudes are positive.

Precision: How Many Decimal Places You Need

Geographic coordinates become more precise with more decimal places. One decimal place locates you within about 11 km. Two places, about 1 km. Three places, about 110 m. Four places, about 11 m. Five places, about 1 m. Six decimal places reaches centimeter-level precision.

For most human navigation purposes, four or five decimal places is more than enough. That level of precision puts you within a few meters of the intended spot — close enough for anyone walking, driving, or using a bike to find you without confusion. Six decimal places does not hurt, but the additional precision is not meaningful in practice when someone is navigating to meet you at a parking entrance or a trailhead.

When Location QR Codes Are More Useful Than a Google Maps Link

You could also create a URL QR code pointing to a Google Maps link for your location — and for many situations that works just as well or better, because the map link can open a named place with photos, reviews, and a familiar interface. The coordinate-based location code has specific advantages in a few situations.

Maps links require an internet connection to load the page before navigation starts. A coordinate QR code can be read by a maps app that has offline maps downloaded, making it useful in areas with poor connectivity. The geo: URI scheme is handled natively by Android and most mapping apps without needing to resolve a URL first.

For temporary or unnamed locations — a drop-off point, a rally point at an event, a site that has no map listing — coordinates are more precise than any searchable address. The pin lands exactly where you place it, not at the nearest named location.

Real-World Uses for Location QR Codes

Event venues and festivals. Large outdoor events are notoriously difficult to navigate. A QR code on wristbands, printed programs, or entrance signage that takes people directly to the event's coordinates removes the confusion of trying to find an unmarked field or fairground via a postal address that may not map correctly.

Hiking and outdoor activities. Trail maps, shelter location cards, and trailhead information boards can carry QR codes for specific waypoints. Hikers scan the code at the trailhead and have the coordinates of the campsite or summit as a navigable point in their phone, even without cell service if offline maps are pre-downloaded.

Delivery instructions. Properties on private roads, farms, or industrial sites with multiple buildings can put a location QR code on their correspondence and delivery documentation. The delivery driver scans it and navigates to the exact collection or delivery point rather than the gate 500 meters away from where they need to be.

Field operations and inspections. Engineers, surveyors, and maintenance crews marking specific infrastructure locations — valve points, inspection hatches, monitoring equipment — can attach QR codes that encode the precise coordinates. Field workers scan and navigate to the exact point without referring to a paper map or remembering a grid reference.

iOS Behavior vs. Android Behavior

The geo: URI that this tool generates is handled differently on iOS and Android. On Android, Google Maps and most navigation apps open directly to the coordinates. On iOS, the geo: scheme is not natively supported in the same way — Apple Maps may not respond to it via a QR scan from the camera app. For broad compatibility across both platforms, a Google Maps URL QR code (https://maps.google.com/?q=lat,lng) works more reliably on iOS, while the geo: format works better on Android.

If your audience is mixed, test on both platforms before printing. A URL-based location QR code using a short Google Maps or Apple Maps share link is the safest cross-platform choice for consumer-facing use.
